知性の限界
人間はこの世界で起こる現象をどこまで理解できるのか。自分が存在するという現象は果たして科学的に理解可能なのか。科学に目的を設定するなら、その目的は物事の始まりと終わりを解き明かすことなのかもしれない。素粒子の一生、原子の一生、分子の一生、細胞の一生、臓器の一生、個体の一生、地球の一生、太陽系の一生、銀河の一生、そして宇宙の一生…。全ては、どのように始めり、どのように終わっていくのか、その過程を含めた一生の遍歴が自然科学の言葉で記述される日は来るのだろうか。
今の科学は目先のことばかり考えている。何かが分かればそれだけでいいのか、何かが役に立てばそれだけでいいのか、何かが便利になればそれだけいいのか…。いや、それらは全て科学の副産物だ。そう、今の科学は副産物を目的として営まれているにすぎない。そもそも問うべき命題が掏（す）り替わっているのが現代科学の問題なのだ。
これまでの科学の発展を覆す必要もないし、そのような副産物を望む人もいる。僕らはその副産物を利用して豊かな生活を送っていると考えられるからだ。しかし、このような命題設定は人間の知的好奇心を満足させるものではない。人間が誰でも求める知の命題は、「自分がどこから来て、どこへ行くのか。自分は一体何者なのか」ということであろう。この命題は哲学を生み、多くの派生した学問を作り出した。
この知の命題を解き明かそうと一生考え続ける人がいる。ある人は音楽をつくったり、ある人は絵を描いたり、ある人は彫刻を掘ったり、ある人は小説を書いたり、ある人は演劇をしたり、ある人は映画を作ったり、ある人はスポーツをしたり、そして…ある人は科学をする。自己の表現方法は様々であるが、物事を深くまで考えれば必ずこの知の命題に行き着く。そして、その命題に対する十分な答えが得られないまま死んでいくのである。
それは知性の限界により、答えられないものなのかもしれない。しかし、その答えが出ないかもしれないことに向かって全身全霊を投入することが、文化的なコンテキストの中で生きるということなのだ。僕は、その知の命題を解き明かす手段の一つとして科学を選んだ。科学を選んだ以上、科学の本質を追求するつもりだ。特に人間を対象とした科学を中心に、生命の一生を考察し続けたいと思う。
