境界と境界の間
学術統合化研究で考えるべき問題について思索を巡らせていました。いきなり、とてつもなくいいアイデアが思いつくわけではないので、いつも同じ事を考えているような気もします。しかし、人間が考察することというのは、最終的には自分の興味があることに行き着きます。そして、統合化によりアプローチしたい問題、それは、どうしても根源的なものになってしまうのです。結局、「この世界がどのようにして生まれ」て「この世界はどのようにして終わるのか」という究極的な問いなのです。
本統合化プロジェクトの目的は、「知の収集や、体系化」などと、どこぞには書いてあるのですが、それはやはり目的ではありません。結局は、上記の世界観を理解するための手段に過ぎない。科学の目的とはそもそも手段なのかもしれません（そういう意味では、技術のなのか？「考える技術」みたいな）。そして、僕達が世界と呼ぶものは多々ありますが、僕の興味のある科学的対象として、「宇宙」や「生命」、そして「心」というものが相当すると思います。そして、それらの最初と最後を考え、なにかしらの答えを生み出す手段として統合化プロジェクトはあるべきだと思うのです。ってこんなこと誰も言わないから、教授にも話してないんですけれど…。
生命は個体として「心」を持っています。しかし、その個体の心は、死んでしまったら消失してしまう。しかも、生命の数だけ「心」があって、それらは時間と共に生成と消滅を繰り返している。そして、「生」と「死」を何遍も何遍も繰り返すのだけれども、全く同じものは決して誕生しない。でも、生命の歴史は淡々と流れ続けて行くわけです。その中で「心」について考察することは、「生」と「死」の境界を考察することであり、それは、まさしく、人の起源や行き先を考えることと同義な気がします。１つの「心」には始まりと終わりがあるのに、複数の「心」を捕まえれば、短い期間では終わりがない。ここに、「１」と「２以上」の根底的なギャップがあるわけです。その中で、どう「１」を考察し、科学的（じゃなくてもいいけど…）な答えを求めて行くことに多分の困難さを感じるのです。それは、もっとミクロな視点になっても同じで、「細胞」の一生を考察する難しさを反映しています。そして、突き詰めていけば、「物質」や「エネルギー」の生成と消滅とは何であるのかを投影しているのです。
その視点で考えれば、「宇宙」も同じです。「宇宙」の始まりと終わりを考察することの難しさは、「宇宙論」の発展を追っていけば分かります。そして、ホーキングが宇宙の特異点を消すために、虚時間を導入したことで、この宇宙は「生」と「死」を繰り返していることを示しました（自分流の解釈です）。「実時間」と「虚時間」が「生」と「死」に対応している、それは、概念が全く異なる相反なものの繰り返しです。そして、その境界性を議論することが、宇宙の始まりと終わりを考察することと同義になるのです。そして、宇宙というものは永遠に続いて行く。でも、その「宇宙」に全く同じものは存在せず、それぞれ個性を持っているものになります。
境界線の間を考察することは、主体が主体自身を考察することなのです。特に、宇宙に関しては、今住んでいる宇宙の外は観察できませんから、究極の主観なのかもしれません。僕らが知っている物理法則は、少なくとも、僕らの住んでいる宇宙でしか成り立たないでしょう（もちろん、成り立つ法則もある）。人の場合は、他人がいますから、それを材料として、それなりに客観的な事実を導き出して、医学に応用したりしています。しかし、自分自身を考察した結果は、少なくとも自分自身にしか成り立たない法則なのです。それ以上のものにはならない。だから、複数の知見を集めて本質を抽出するという作業が必要になります。むしろ、複数あるということは、そういうことができる強みを持っていることになるのです。（宇宙の場合は、もう一つの宇宙を観測して、僕らの宇宙と比較するということができない。）これまで、検証可能性が高いものに関しては、そのようにして、確固たる科学の定説として創り上げられてきました。しかし、物事が複雑で、そのような作業ができなかった問題が今だ残されています。本プロジェクトはそのような課題に対して、鋭いメスを入れるべきだと思うのです。あくまで理想論で、人間がその問題を解決できる知的能力があるのかは疑問ではあるのですが、そういう意識を持って仕事を進めて行くべきだと思っているわけです。こういう考え方に賛同してくれる人が少しでも身近にいることが僕の心の救いになるのかもしれません。とにかく、そのような方向性で、僕は科学と向き合っていこうと思っています。
