もちろん一抹の不安もある。最終的な知的産物が既存研究のまとめに過ぎないものになってしまったら、新しい学問などという言葉は水の泡と消える。そこから、何か得体の知れないものが生まれてくることを望んではいるが、実体がどのようなものになるのか全く想像がつかない。そうなれば、自分は何をやっているのだ、と相手から攻められても仕方がないであろう。僕が選ぼうとしている道は、いわゆる出世コースではない。自分が面白いと思ったことに無心で飛び込んで、失敗してしまったらそれはそれでいいと思う。そんな無茶な考えで研究していた奴もいたのだと笑われても、自分としては満足できる。でも、もし事がうまくいけば、科学界に風穴を開ける仕事ができるかもしれない。それに賭けるしかないのだ。
僕はギャンブルはやらないが、それは自分の人生がギャンブルだからである。もうそのドキドキ感でお腹が一杯なのだ。だからといって、あまり成功とか失敗とかは意識しない。もちろん成功することは快感であるが、失敗はそれを常に支えているからだ。人生楽しまなければ意味がない！その代償として、それなりに凹むことも多いけど、それは成功への推進力となる。自分の安定を顧みず、常に自分の可能性に賭けたい。それでダメでも後悔は全くしないだろう。
