創造的な薬剤師
薬学部が乱立している。それだけ薬学に人気があるのだろうか。そんな異変に気が付いたのは、去年の今頃だったように思う。日本薬科大学が見開き２面で新聞広告を掲載していたからだ。今年も同じようなカラー広告が載っていて、その違和感をぶり返した。そして、今年は神奈川県に横浜薬科大学が創立し、新聞で募集を呼びかけていた。しかも、学長はノーベル物理学賞受賞者の江崎玲於奈である。
なぜ、彼が薬科大学の学長を引き受けたのだろうか。自分としては驚きを隠せなかったが、今後の科学の発展は生命科学が象徴的になるであろうという考えからきているのかもしれない。しかし、専門教育に彼が携わることはできないだろうから、彼の精神を受け継いでくれる人材を育て上げることに目標をおくことになる。日本人のノーベル賞受賞者の中で最も人格的に偉人だと思うのは確かに彼である。講演等で日本の科学の未来を憂いているし、教育にも積極的な発言をしている。たとえ大学の経営者側がネームバリューを利用して彼を学長に祀り上げたのだとしても、彼には学生に伝えたかった熱い想いがあったに違いない。
きっと、それは創造性に他ならないはずだ。創造的な医療の担い手が薬剤師から生まれることを少なからず望んでいるだろう。彼が医療現場のことをどれだけ把握しているのかは分からないが、医療体制は未だ完全に医師を筆頭とした縦社会である。医者が変わらなければ、医療の体質は変わらないと言えるのが現状だ。となると、薬剤師や看護士は医師の頭ごなしな命令を聞くことが仕事となり、医者の手足として働くだけの存在になってしまうのだ。もちろん、医師の間違えを訂正することはできる、しかし、医師の治療方針に口出しすることは基本的にできないのである。そこに薬剤師が踏み込むことが少しでもできるようになることを願って、江崎さんが医薬の創造性を問い続けることに意味があるはずだ。
そのような理念で、新しい薬科大学をつくるのなら、そこでの教育は「病態の分かる薬剤師」を育成することに重点を置いて欲しい。薬学教育は実はかなり多彩である。物理も化学も生物も基本的には全て分かっていなければならず、薬学はそれらを土台とした応用学問なのである。このように守備範囲が広いがゆえに、教育の仕方によっては偏った人材となってしまい、基礎を重視する国立大学などでは、薬剤師の免許は持っていても患者のことは全く分からない学生が大量に生まれてしまうのである。基礎研究を行う者であれば、それはそれでいい訳であるが、全ての大学がそうなることを目指さないだろうし、そうなるべきでない。臨床に関わる人材を育てるのであれば、やはり患者のことを理解できる能力を養う必要があるのだ。その最初の切り札が「病態の理解できる薬剤師」であると思う。
多くの私立大学が国家試験にどれだけ合格させることができるかに重点を置いている中、江崎さんが学長になるのであれば、そのような本質的な薬剤師の育成に力を注いで欲しいと願う。実際にどれだけの成果が生まれるのかは未知数であるが、江崎さんの名前だけを借りた大学に成り下がらないよう、教育的な配慮が行われることに期待している。実学としての薬学の発展性は、まだかなりあるのだから…。
