生命を斬る
頭がいい奴は生物学をやらない、っという観念が科学界にはある。数学ができないから、物理が分からないから生物学でもやろうと考える人がいるからだ。確かに数学ができるというのは、「頭がいい」の代名詞とも思えるし、数学を使って自然を記述する理論物理学は、科学の崇高な花のように映る。それに引き換え、生物学は実験をやれどもやれどもパッとした結論が出ない。まったく切れの悪い刀のようというか、鈍器である。それでも、生物学者はその刀を研ごうとせず、ひたすらその鈍器で宿敵を打ちつづけるのである。生物には理論が無いといわれる所以だ
理論は美しい、だから多くの人を魅了する。多くのエリートはその美しさに魅了され、その取り扱いが可能だと判断すれば、理論の構築を志す。実際に自然がどのように成り立っていようが関係ない、実験的に検証できなくてもいい、「つじつま」が合えばいいのである。壮大な仮説は万人にとっても興奮を喚起する記述だ。実際に検証できなくても全然構わないと思わせてしまうロマンを抱かせてくれるものだろう。そんな「考え」に出会えただけでも素敵だ、きっとみんなそう思う。
ロマンチックな理論物理学の対極が、泥臭い生物科学かもしれない。胡散臭い論文も山ほどある。それでもなぜ生命を研究するのか、それはやはり自分が生命であるからに他ならないと思う。自分を知りたい、自分の根源を探求したい、そういう欲求の湧きあがりが止まらないのである。でも、さらに欲を言うなら、生命科学にもう少し理論物理学的な思考を導入してもいいと思う。数理的に生物を扱うことが始まってはいるが、まだまだ物理学と生物学との間にある垣根は高い。生命が持つ多くのブラックボックス、最終的にすべてがわかることは無いかもしれないけれど、なんとかしてこのブラックボックスの中身を垣間見てやろうとする努力をするべき時期になっているのではないか。
