サイエンスのニュース記事でヒトの進化についてのトピックが上がっていたが、果たしてこれから僕たちはどんな進化を遂げるのか。結論から言うと、長期的な予測はできないのだが、進化はしているだろうということだ。ダーウィンの進化論的な発想からすれば、あくまで進化というものは周囲の環境に適応するための自然選択の結果であるから、今の環境が生きにくい条件なら生きやすい方へ進化するだけのことである。もし、ＨＩＶが蔓延し、多くの人間がＡＩＤＳと戦わなければいけない状況に陥れば、ヒトはＨＩＶに感染しにくい体質を持つように進化していくのだ。だから、僕たちの文明的な活動の結果、生態系が狂い、人間にとって不利になるような地球環境ができてしまえば、それに対応するように動物は時間をかけて進化を遂げる。人間の行動のツケは人間が取るべきであるが、そのツケに適応する動物が出てくることは考えられるのである。しかしながら、生物の進化の速さは、文明の進化の速さと比べて数万倍遅い。つまり、文明による革命的な環境変化は、文明によってでしか打ち返すことができないはずなのだ。僕たちと同世代に生きる生命を守るためには、これまで以上に思慮深い行動や考え方が必要で、できる限り率先してそのツケを回収しなければならない。
