生きている証
苦しさを感じていることは生きていることの証でもある。それは、幸せを感じていることが生きている証だと言い換えることもできるだろう。「生」というものを、苦しみで表現するか、楽しみで表現するかは幼少時代の経験がかなり影響してくるのではなかろうか。子供の頃は、生きているということがどういうことなのか分からなかった。自分自身が感じえること全てが、「生」であった。そして、「死」は「生」の反対であって、そのとき感じていた感覚から離脱することが「死」だったのである。
生きていることが楽しいと思い続けて育った場合、子供心にして本気で死にたいと思うことはまずないであろう。生きていることに感謝する意識が働かないほど、目の前の楽しさに没頭すれば、それを失うことを本能的に拒絶する。そのような生命体が、自ら死を選ぶことは考えにくい。生きていることは自らにとって得なことなのである。しかし、今の感情がひどく辛くて、それを放棄したいと思えば、それは死の選択を目指すことにもなる。僕は小学生の頃何度も死にたいと思った。今のこの苦しい状況を打破するには死が有効であることに薄々気がついていたのだ。この苦しみから解放されるなら、死んだほうがいいのではないかと自分勝手な思いをめぐらせていたのだ。それは、生よりも死のほうが楽であろうと判断させた肉体的本能があった。
なぜなら、僕は「小児喘息」を患っていたからである。小学6年生まで続いた。中学生になって治ったことには心から感謝している。もしこの病気から開放されていなかったら、今の僕はどうなっていたのかまったく予想することができない、というより、予想することが怖い。「喘息」は本気で生命の危機を感じる病気なのである。喘息発作が生じると、気道の狭窄により、物質的に取り入れることのできる酸素の量が激減する。呼吸困難に陥ると文字通り、息苦しくて、まさに生き地獄である。夜中に発作が起きれば、親が飛び起きて、噴霧器を僕の喉にあてがい、症状が治まるまで付きっ切りの看病、今思えば親の負担も相当なものだと思うが、当の本人はその苦しみと戦うことで精一杯で、親の気持ちなんて考えることはできなかった。
だから、「生きていることは苦しいこと」と思うのは自然の成り行きであった。苦しいことと戦うことに一種の覚悟ができたように思う。苦しいことに「生」を強く感じる精神が幼少期の体験を通じて築かれていったのではないだろうか。僕は、「死」の選択が比較的容易であることを知っている。しかし、自分がもし僕の親だったら、子供（僕）の死を希望するだろうか、そんなはずはない、あの親の必死さを見ればそれは誰でもわかることだ。生きていることは家族への敬愛そのものである。生きていることは苦しいけれども、その家族を思う気持ちが僕の糧になり、生きる喜びになっている。僕の「生」への価値観はもっぱら主観的な苦しみから創出され、それが安全地帯になっているようにも思える。
